PERSOL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Started Testing Services for Real Driving Emissions (RDE) Test
– Total support from on-road exhaust gas measurement to data analysis –
PERSOL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Co., Ltd., which is involved in the technical engineering business in a PERSOL group offering comprehensive human resource services (Headquarters: 3-18-1, Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya-shi, Aichi Japan, President and Representative Director Eiji Isoda, hereinafter referred to as "PERSOL R&D") starts providing services for Real Driving Emission (hereinafter referred to as "RDE") test that packages from installation of measurement equipment to driving route planning, measurement, and data analysis.
■Background: Changes in measurement methods for stricter regulations on exhaust gas measurements
While the shift to electric automobiles has progressed in recent years, it is expected that the number of vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines will still account for about 70%1 in 2050. Therefore, reducing exhaust gas has become an ongoing challenge for those involved in automobile development.
In addition, the emission fraud of diesel vehicles in Europe was discovered in September 2015. Therefore, in Japan in 2018, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that the RDE test2 is mandatory to resolve the difference of exhaust gas amount between bench test and on-road driving. As a result, for new diesel passenger cars, the RDE test will be applied from October 1, 2022. In the case of continuously produced vehicles, the test at the time of model designation is scheduled to be applied from October 1, 2024.
The conventional exhaust gas measurement methods have the advantage that the conditions are constant, and the reproducibility is high. This is because the vehicle is fixed on the chassis dynamometer3 installed in the test room and driven in a specified mode that represents a certain driving pattern for measurement. However, the above measurement method cannot completely reproduce the exhaust gas situation when actually driving on the road. For that reason, moving forward, the RDE test will be fully introduced, in which the vehicle is actually driven on a public road and the exhaust gas is measured.

■Outline of RDE Testing Services
Persol R&D has been providing various test services including exhaust gas measurements using chassis dynamometer and engine test benches. And, in response to the regulation of RDE, we have introduced Portable Emissions Measurement System (hereinafter referred to as "PEMS"). This makes it possible to provide total support for all processes required for exhaust gas measurements while driving on the road, such as PEMS installation on vehicles, planning and verification of driving routes, and measurement and analysis of the data.
- Measuring the number of particles of particulate matter as Particulate Number (PN)
In addition to nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), total hydrocarbons (THC), etc. can be measured. It is also possible to measure the number of particles in particulate matter as a Particulate Number (PN).
- Realization of high test success rates in combination with analysis support
In the RDE test, knowledge and skill are also required for the driving route planning because in addition to mileage and driving conditions, it is prescribed to drive a certain percentage in urban areas, suburbs, and highways in addition to the mileage and driving conditions. We have achieved high driving test success rates by combining experienced experimental engineers who have a great deal of knowledge in automobile development and our original real-time analysis software.
- Acquiring highly accurate comparison data with the same driver
Since the same driver operates the exhaust gas measurement test with the chassis dynamometer installed in the test room and the RDE test, it is possible to obtain more accurate comparison data.
In the future, Persol R&D will consider supporting not only automobiles but also agricultural and construction machinery for which regulations are being strengthened. We will respond to various requests such as test confirmations in design and development, performance surveys, benchmarks, etc., and will contribute to solving emissions problems.
