PERSOL R&D, Engine Testing Services with Carbon-Neutral (CN) Fuel Launched

- Contribution to Development for Carbon Neutrality with Diesel Engines -


PERSOL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya-shi, Aichi Prefecture; President and Representative Director: Eiji Isoda, hereinafter referred to as "PERSOL R&D"), which is engaged in the technical engineering business of the PERSOL Group, will start the engine performance, functionality, and durability test services for carbon-neutral (CN) fuel, which is expected to realize carbon-neutral diesel engines, from September 2021.

■Background: Trends toward the carbon neutrality of engine-equipped vehicles
In Japan, "Carbon Neutrality by 2050" was declared at the extraordinary Diet session in October 2020 and "Green Growth Strategy Through Achieving Carbon Neutrality in 2050"1 was formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry amid growing interest in energy issues against the background of global warming. Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. has also agreed to these policies; fuel efficiency improvement and electric vehicle development are being promoted at an accelerating rate. However, the conversion of conventional fuel to CN fuel is also an important measure. CN fuels are biofuels, synthetic fuels derived from renewable sources, and more. By using CN fuel, it is thought that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will even out because synthetic fuel takes in CO2 during the manufacturing process, and biofuel absorbs CO2 via the photosynthesis of the plants used as raw materials.

CN fuel is expected to help achieve carbon neutrality through its use in heavy-duty commercial vehicles and agricultural & construction machinery. These are difficult to electrify due to the long cruising range and large output because it is said that CN fuel can be used as a fuel infrastructure for diesel engines. Due to these movements, the need for testing services of CN fuel in existing diesel engines is increasing.

■Our engine test services for carbon-neutral fuels
PERSOL R&D will start supporting CN fuel in the diesel engine test services that we have been conducting for many years. We provide data regarding the existence of development issues comparing with existing fossil fuels (JIS No. 2 gas oil) after conducting engine tests for performance/functionality such as durability, output, and fuel efficiency as well as engine disassembly surveys.

We have already received many inquiries regarding these tests, and from September we will start diesel engine durability test services using HVO2, which has been attracting a lot of attention as a next-generation biofuel. Subsequently, we will be gradually developing performance/functionality test services and the same services using synthetic fuels.

■Overview of engine test service
Due to our many years of development work with commercial vehicle manufacturers, it is possible to carry out multifaceted tests such as experimental evaluations and disassembly surveys to investigate the effects on engine performance and functionality of using CN fuel, Furthermore, we will also propose improvements (such as the durability of each part) based on the results of tests and disassembly surveys.

  1. Durability test and subsequent disassembly survey
    By continuously operating an engine with CN fuel under the conditions according to the evaluation target, we provide a data set of filter clogging, deposits inside the engine, the wear of parts as well as the durability of rubber and resin materials used for sealing materials and hoses. It is also possible to evaluate the purification performance and deterioration of the exhaust emission control device.
  2. Performance / function confirmation test
    We measure engine output, temperature, pressure, fuel efficiency, and exhaust gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and also analyze combustion. In addition, we respond to requests to examine engine control conditions and evaluate each part/function such as vibrational stress and noise due to changes in control conditions as well as readjusting engine control parameters according to the intended use of the engine and the characteristics of the fuel used.

PERSOL R&D will contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality with engines while actively working on the commercial vehicle industry, the agricultural & construction machinery industry, and fuel manufacturing, and making the best use of the engine development technology that we have provided for many years.
